I don't think it's mean. It's a very firm statement that a boundary was crossed. :)
I don't get "a/s/l" all that often, but I do frequently get total strangers, often with nonsense names, opening IM conversations with me for conversations I don't want to have. Other times, I get a "friendship" request from a stranger, then I look at the avatar and I find it's a woman in a state of undress. Nowadays, I just close any window that opens when I don't know who's on the other end. This has only started happening in the last few months, and I wonder if there's any way of stopping the sex spammers without blocking people who are genuine.
