From Shirt to Skirt

Tonight I should have been doing 100 things. So I made a skirt. Shouts out to Shannon (and AlterNation) for giving me some excellent ideas on how to chop up the shirt. The template that I used for the pattern is from one that I made based on the instructions in Sew What Skirts.

Men's shirt skirt - the shirt  Finished skirt

The basic steps are as follows:

  1. Cut off the sleeves.
  2. Choose if you want the sleeve holes along the hem line, or a more "traditional" skirt hem. If you opt to put the sleeve hole on the bottom you'll need to decide where you want the hole to sit (sides of your legs, front and back... with godets, or open).
Conventional hemline Armhole hemline  Tattoo action hemline
  3. Trim the bottom hem of the shirt to make a curved waist band. Use a sewing pattern to shape a waist with darts.
  4. Use the sleeves as a waist band (I applied the waist band like a quilt binding to tuck away the raw edges).
  5. Add a hem to the bottom...and that's it!

The full set of images showing the skirt construction from start to finish is over on flickr. The images won't teach you how to sew a skirt, but it should give you enough information to make your own shirt to skirt.
